First Market

Thoughts, and Feelings

I found Neighborhood Flea through a lot of Google searching for craft/art markets in pittsburgh. The application process was pretty easy. There were some things on the application that were a little confusing, but I looked things up and I asked questions about what I didn't understand. It was nice having people around to help me. Meeting with Vero helped me alot with understanding what to do, and how to prepare for the market. Preparing my materials was pretty easy. I had most of the yarn I used for my products, the only yarn I bought was for my wash cloth. My display was mostly boxes from Construction Junction. It was nice going there because I was able to find really good display boxes for my table. Preparing emotionally and physically was kind of hard, but I had a lot of support from my family and friends. Financially it was hard. I quit my job and had to find a new way of paying for my booth fee and materials, so I took up babysitting, and doing commission for crocheted pieces. My inventory was pretty limited, but I believe I had a good selection of things. I had little drawstring bags, scrunchies, washcloths, and headbands. I priced everything on how much I wanted to get paid, times how long it took me to make it plus material cost. There are items that I think should be priced higher, but with those items I didn't count for material. A lot of the people that came by were higher middle class white women, probably between 40 and 65 years old. They would tell me how my crocheting is beautiful and how they used to do it but now they don't. I think seeing someone that crocheted brings back memories for a lot of older people. I learned that I need to speak up more. I've gotten better at it, but after I say hi my words freeze. I want to sell more items that aren’t just crocheted. Maybe adding art prints, illustrations, and stickers. I think I would have fun adding more items. I do want to add small crocheted shoulder bags, but those would probably be the most expensive thing I sell. The drawstring bags worked really well, and they were easy to make. As well as the 3 pack of scrunchies. I thought the mini washcloths were going to do better, but I didn't sell any of them. The same goes with my washcloth bundle. I think having a larger selection of the washcloth bundles might be better for next time.I really enjoyed doing this market. I do want to try other markets, and maybe try ones outside of Pittsburgh, but I would definitely do another market. It was nice getting my business out there and talking to people. Getting out of my comfort zone was nice.
